PHd Design Bags Two Silver Awards at Summit Creative Awards 2024!

Studio News 23rd September 2024

We’ve always known that our team’s hard work and creativity would take us places, and now it’s official! PHd Design has just been awarded not one, but two Silver awards at the 2024 Summit Creative Awards.

Cue the confetti!

Out of thousands of entries from 27 countries (yes, you read that right—27 countries!), our designs stood out to a panel of industry experts, and we’re over the moon to share the details:

Silver Award for Logo Design – Consumer: Our packaging design for The Sweet Scotch Egg Co impressed the judges with its playful yet refined look.

Silver Award for Complete Rebrand/Redesign: Our rebranding work for Tile Rite earned us top marks in the highly competitive rebrand category.
Side note: PHd was the only UK-based agency to place in this category. Not that we’re bragging… okay, maybe just a little.

For those who aren’t familiar, the Summit Creative Awards is a global competition with a reputation for recognising the best of the best in design and branding. It’s been running for over 30 years, and their rigorous evaluation process ensures only the most creative and innovative projects get recognised. So, it’s safe to say, these shiny silver wins mean a lot to us!

What do these wins mean for you?

First and foremost, these awards reflect the skill and dedication of our team here at PHd Design. We love solving design challenges, whether it’s giving a brand a total overhaul (hello, Tile Rite) or creating memorable packaging that makes products leap off the shelf (looking at you, Sweet Scotch Egg Co).

If you’ve been thinking about refreshing your brand or creating a new identity that truly stands out, now might be the perfect time to get in touch. We’re not saying these awards prove we know a thing or two about good design… but, well, the awards say it for us.

A Big Thank You

Of course, none of this would be possible without our fantastic clients who trust us to bring their visions to life. We’d like to extend a massive thank you to The Sweet Scotch Egg Co and Tile Rite for giving us the opportunity to work on such fun and rewarding projects.

Also, a shoutout to the Summit Creative Awards team for recognising our work among such stiff global competition. We’re already polishing our pencils (okay, keyboards) for next year’s entries!

What’s Next for PHd Design?

We’re not slowing down any time soon. Our team is buzzing with new ideas, exciting projects, and plenty of coffee to fuel the next wave of creativity. Whether you’re after a total brand refresh or need packaging that makes your product the star of the show, we’re here to help make that happen.

If you’d like to chat about how we can bring your next project to life, we’re just an email or phone call away. We promise, no hard sales pitches—just a friendly chat about design (and maybe some cake if you visit us at the studio).

Here’s to more creativity, collaboration, and—fingers crossed—gold trophies next year!

PHd Design Joins National Doodle Day 2024: Let the Scribbling for Charity Begin!

Studio News 20th September 2024

national doodle day

Ready. Set. Doodle! We’re thrilled to announce that PHd Design is once again taking part in ‘National Doodle Day’ this year. That’s right—on Friday, 27th September, the nation’s most creative campaign to support ‘Epilepsy Action’ will commence, and we’re picking up our pens, pencils, and paintbrushes for a cause close to our hearts.

What’s National Doodle Day, You Ask?

‘National Doodle Day’ is the 20th annual fundraiser for ‘Epilepsy Action,’ a charity dedicated to helping those affected by epilepsy. Last year, this event brought together over 600 artists, illustrators, and even a few celebrities to doodle for donations. This year, they’re celebrating in style by extending the auction to a full ten days!

From 20th to 29th September, you’ll have the chance to bid on some incredible (and quirky) artworks on eBay. The funds raised go directly towards supporting the vital work of ‘Epilepsy Action.’

Our Team is All In (Again!)

This marks the second year that PHd Design is joining in on the doodle fun, and we couldn’t be more excited. Every member of our team has picked up their creative tools and submitted a unique doodle, which will be auctioned off as part of the fundraiser. We’ve been working hard behind the scenes, offering sneak peeks of our artwork on social media—because what’s an auction without a little pre-bid excitement?

A Little Incentive for a Big Impact

But we’re not just doodling for fun (although, let’s be honest, it is fun). To make things even more interesting, we’ve got a little challenge brewing within the PHd Design team. Whoever raises the most funds with their doodle will receive a top-secret special prize! No pressure, right? So, if you’re thinking of bidding, know that you’re not only supporting a great cause but also helping to fuel some healthy competition among our crew.

How You Can Get Involved

The auction kicks off on 20th September and will run for a whopping ten days on eBay. You’ll be able to browse through hundreds of original artworks, including our team’s doodles. Not only can you bid on a masterpiece (or a scribbly disaster—we won’t judge), but you’ll also be contributing to a fantastic charity that supports countless people living with epilepsy.

To keep up with the latest doodle developments, be sure to follow our social media channels where we’ll be posting updates and maybe even a few behind-the-scenes antics. And who knows? You might just find that perfect piece to add a splash of colour to your home or office!

So, mark your calendars and get ready to bid on some doodle-tastic creations. Every little bit helps, and together, we can make this year’s ‘National Doodle Day’ the biggest and best one yet.

Stay tuned, stay doodly, and let’s do some good!

Copyright Quandaries: Navigating the Legalities of Using Images in Graphic Design

Industry News 17th September 2024

A copyright infringement warning illustrated by a thief being caught.

In the world of design, images are the building blocks of any great project. But with so many photos, graphics, and illustrations available online, it can be a minefield when it comes to navigating copyright laws. Whether you’re designing a logo, building a brand identity, or creating social media graphics, using images without proper authorization can land you in hot water.

Here at PHd Design, we know copyright can feel like a daunting topic, especially for businesses new to branding and design. That’s why we’re here to break it down and make it as simple as possible. In this blog, we’ll demystify copyright, guide you through image rights, and show you how to keep your business on the right side of the law—all without the legal jargon and stress. Let’s dive in!

Why Copyright Matters for Your Business

First things first: what is copyright? In its simplest form, copyright is a way for creators to protect their original work, whether it’s a photograph, illustration, or design. It’s their way of saying, “I made this, so I get to decide how it’s used.” For businesses, copyright is crucial. It ensures that your company’s branding is unique and not at risk of legal challenges.

Now, imagine using an image without permission in your latest marketing campaign. The potential consequences? Legal action, fines, and a tarnished brand reputation—not to mention the awkward email exchanges with angry creators. On the flip side, using images legally shows that you respect intellectual property and support creatives in the industry. It’s a win-win.

Types of Image Rights and Licenses Explained

Copyright, royalty-free, public domain, Creative Commons…sound like a foreign language? Let’s simplify these terms so you know exactly what to expect when working with us at PHd Design:

Copyright: The original creator owns the work, and no one else can use it without permission. Simple as that.
Royalty-Free: You pay a one-time fee to use the image, but you don’t own it. There are usually some restrictions on where and how it can be used.
Public Domain: These are images that aren’t protected by copyright, either because the copyright has expired or the creator has waived their rights. These are free to use—just be sure you’re picking from genuine public domain sources!
Creative Commons: This is a type of license that lets creators specify how their work can be used. Some allow for free use with proper credit, while others have more restrictions.
When we work with clients, you’ll often hear us discussing these terms, especially when we’re sourcing images for your project. It’s all about finding the right fit for your brand while staying on the safe side of the law.

Finding and Using Images Legally

So, where can you find images that you can legally use? There are plenty of options, and we’re here to help you navigate them:

Stock Photo Websites: Platforms like Shutterstock and Adobe Stock offer a treasure trove of images with various licensing options. We always make sure to check these licenses to understand any usage restrictions before incorporating them into your designs.
Image Libraries: Some organisations provide libraries of royalty-free images for commercial use. However, it’s crucial to double-check licensing terms even on ‘free’ image sites, as they can vary.
Original Content: When in doubt, create! At PHd Design, we often encourage businesses to commission original graphics and photography. It’s the best way to ensure your branding is truly unique and 100% yours.
When searching for images, beware of the telltale signs of potential copyright issues—like watermarked images or high-resolution files with no apparent owner information. If you do find a suitable image, look out for licensing details and always credit creators if required. It’s all about giving credit where it’s due.

The Risks of Copyright Infringement

Now, let’s get to the not-so-fun side of things. What happens if you use a copyrighted image without permission? In short, nothing good. From legal action and hefty fines to a damaged brand reputation, the risks are real.

Take, for instance, the infamous case of a small UK business that used a copyrighted photograph in their promotional materials without proper licensing. They were slapped with a cease-and-desist order and had to pay a large settlement fee—not to mention the hit to their public image. The lesson? It’s far cheaper (and less stressful) to get it right from the start.

But here’s the good news: these risks are entirely avoidable with a bit of knowledge and the right resources. That’s where we come in.

How PHd Design Helps You Stay on the Right Side of Copyright

At PHd Design, we’ve got your back when it comes to copyright. When we create designs for you, we take every precaution to ensure that all images are sourced legally and appropriately. Here’s how we handle things:

Image Sourcing: We use reputable stock photo websites and image libraries with clear licensing agreements, making sure each image fits your brand’s needs and legal requirements.
Original Content: For projects that need a bespoke touch, we collaborate with photographers and illustrators to create original content tailored just for your business.
Documentation: We keep records of all image sources, licenses, and permissions for every project. This ensures that you’re fully protected, allowing you to focus on what you do best—running your business.

By entrusting PHd Design with your project, you can rest easy knowing that we’re handling the complexities of copyright so you don’t have to.

When to Seek Legal Advice

While we’re pretty knowledgeable when it comes to copyright in design, there are situations where consulting a legal professional might be wise. Complex copyright disputes, custom licensing agreements, or questions about using copyrighted material in unique ways are all instances where a lawyer’s input is invaluable.

Of course, if you’re unsure about anything related to image use, don’t hesitate to reach out to us first. We’re always here to help and guide you in the right direction.

In the grand game of marketing, content may be king, but collateral is the queen who makes all the moves. Both are essential to achieving your business objectives, and when they work together, the results can be truly powerful.

Copyright might seem like a maze, but with a bit of understanding, it’s easy to navigate. From knowing why copyright matters to deciphering licenses and avoiding common pitfalls, you’re now equipped with the essentials to make informed choices when it comes to images in design.

And remember, you’re not alone in this. At PHd Design, we’re here to make the design process as simple and straightforward as possible—copyright included. Ready to start your next project with peace of mind? Get in touch with us today!

Highgate: From Blueprint to Branding

Our Work 10th September 2024

Highgate Corner branding logo, showcasing the vibrant and modern design created by PHd Design.

When Highgate Corner in Birmingham approached us at PHd Design, they had one simple request: to turn a prime piece of real estate into a development that would grab attention, make a lasting impression, and sell properties like hotcakes. We knew this was no ordinary branding project – it was about creating a visual identity that would resonate with potential buyers and breathe life into an otherwise vacant space.

Setting the Cornerstone

Our journey with Highgate Corner began with a blank canvas – literally. The property had no existing branding, no established identity, just potential waiting to be unleashed. We rolled up our sleeves and got to work, starting with the essentials: the brand identity.
The key was to ensure Highgate Corner’s brand captured the essence of modern Birmingham – a city that’s vibrant, dynamic, and always on the move. We developed a logo and colour palette that reflected this ethos: clean lines, bold typography, and a sophisticated, yet approachable colour scheme that whispered “luxury” without shouting “too expensive.”

Beyond the Brand: Creative Hoarding that Works Overtime

Next up was the hoarding design – a crucial element in making sure Highgate Corner stood out. We didn’t want just any hoarding; we wanted a visual masterpiece that would turn heads and start conversations.
We approached this with a bit of tongue-in-cheek creativity. After all, why should hoarding be boring? Our design featured eye-catching graphics and playful messaging that made passers-by do a double-take. But it wasn’t just about looking good; we strategically placed calls to action and key information to convert curious onlookers into potential buyers.

Marketing Materials That Do the Heavy Lifting

Branding and hoarding? Done. But we didn’t stop there. To fully equip Highgate Corner for success, we created a suite of marketing materials that would make any property developer green with envy. From brochures that doubled as coffee table books to digital assets that could be splashed across social media, we ensured every piece of marketing material was as polished as the properties themselves.
We also added a sprinkle of local charm. After all, Birmingham is the beating heart of the Midlands. We infused references to the local culture and community into the content, creating an emotional connection with potential buyers – because everyone wants to feel like they’re coming home, not just buying a house.

The Results: More Than Just Bricks and Mortar

The outcome? Highgate Corner didn’t just become another development in Birmingham; it became a landmark. The branding, hoarding, and marketing materials worked in harmony to create a buzz around the project, helping to drive enquiries and, more importantly, sales.
For us at PHd Design, this project was more than just a branding exercise. It was about taking a vision and turning it into reality, creating something that not only met the client’s expectations but exceeded them.

The Final Touches: Bringing it All Together

With the name, logo, and colour scheme sorted, we moved on to the finer details. We created a brand guide that outlines how Recyclapack should be presented across all mediums, from their website to their business cards. This ensures that the brand maintains a consistent, professional appearance, no matter where it’s seen.

The Result: A Brand That Stands Out

The outcome? Highgate Corner didn’t just become another development in Birmingham; it became a landmark. The branding, hoarding, and marketing materials worked in harmony to create a buzz around the project, helping to drive enquiries and, more importantly, sales.

How to Unlock Creativity in Design Projects (Without Overcomplicating It)

Industry News 5th September 2024

A woman working on a creative design project, illustrating the power of inspiration and simplicity.

In a world where branding and design can often feel like a maze of conflicting trends, but at PHd Design, we believe that creativity should be accessible and uncomplicated. Our philosophy? Keep it simple, while delivering powerful results. And today, we’re going to share some key ways to inspire creativity in design projects, no matter the constraints.

The Power of Unexpected Combinations

Blending Unrelated Elements

One of the easiest ways to breathe fresh life into your designs is by mixing things up. Imagine combining bold typography with striking photography or throwing together digital and traditional techniques—who said you can’t paint on paper and digitise it later? Playing with unexpected colour palettes or juxtaposing wildly different elements is a surefire way to make your designs stand out.

Contrasting Styles

Ever thought about pairing minimalist design with something grandiose, like intricate illustrations or ornate typefaces? This contrast of simplicity and complexity can create a design that captures attention immediately. At PHd Design, we’ve had great success merging classic and modern aesthetics to create timeless yet trendy designs. It’s all about balance—bold where it counts, simple where it needs to be.

Embracing Constraints as Opportunities

Limitations as Launchpads

Constraints can actually be your best friend. Whether it’s a limited budget, a tight deadline, or rigid project requirements, restrictions force you to think creatively. Working with what you’ve got can spark innovation, leading to clever solutions you might not have considered otherwise.

Case Studies

Take, for instance, one of our branding projects where the budget constraints were tighter than expected. Rather than shy away, we embraced minimalist design principles and focused on strategic use of space and typography. The result? A clean, impactful brand identity that resonated deeply with the target audience without breaking the bank.

Leveraging Storytelling

Narrative Design

Storytelling in design isn’t just about fancy headlines and captivating taglines. It’s about creating a visual narrative that resonates emotionally. Good design can take a customer on a journey—one where they feel connected to your brand on a personal level. Whether through imagery, symbols, or the strategic use of space, narrative design can add depth to your message.

Visual Metaphors and Symbolism

Let’s say you’re designing for a wellness brand. A rising sun could symbolise renewal or growth, while a ripple in water might convey calmness and mindfulness. By weaving these metaphors into your designs, you’re communicating complex ideas in an instant, tapping into emotional responses without overcomplicating things.

Experimenting with New Technologies

Embracing Emerging Trends

Today’s digital landscape is brimming with new tools and technologies. AI, AR, and VR are now at the forefront of design innovation. Whether it’s creating AI-generated art for unique textures or using AR to create an interactive user experience, these tools offer boundless opportunities to push creative boundaries. But the key is using them wisely—technology should enhance the design, not overshadow it.

Ethical Considerations

That said, emerging tech comes with its own challenges. When using AI, for example, we must remain mindful of ethical considerations—ensuring that our designs are original and not entirely machine-generated. It’s essential to strike the right balance between human creativity and digital assistance.

Seeking Inspiration from Unconventional Sources

Looking Beyond Design

Sometimes, the best inspiration comes from outside the design world. Why not delve into art history, literature, or even nature for fresh ideas? Imagine taking inspiration from the fluidity of Van Gogh’s brushstrokes or the geometric patterns found in nature. It’s these unexpected sources that can ignite creative sparks where you least expect them.

Collaborative Approaches

Another brilliant way to spark creativity is by working with people outside the design world. When collaborating with clients from different industries—whether it’s retail, tech, or hospitality—their unique perspectives can offer fresh insights, leading to innovative design solutions. After all, creativity is contagious.

Simple Ideas, Big Impact

The world of design doesn’t need to be a cluttered mess of complicated theories. At PHd Design, we’ve made it our mission to simplify the process while maintaining creativity at its core. Whether it’s through unexpected combinations, storytelling, or embracing new tech, the goal is always the same: effective design that resonates.

So next time you’re embarking on a design project, remember that constraints can fuel creativity, collaboration can broaden your perspective, and sometimes the simplest ideas are the most powerful. Keep it simple, stay creative, and when you’re ready to take your project to the next level—PHd Design is here to help.

In the grand game of marketing, content may be king, but collateral is the queen who makes all the moves. Both are essential to achieving your business objectives, and when they work together, the results can be truly powerful.

Feeling Inspired?

We’d love to hear your ideas! Whether it’s a branding overhaul or a fresh design concept, drop us a line, and let’s create something amazing together.
