About PHd Design

We’re a boutique, award-winning design agency with a long-standing reputation for thoughtful, high-quality work. Established in 1992, we’ve worked with businesses across a wide range of sectors, helping them look better, communicate more clearly, and ultimately perform better.

We’re also… a bit odd (in a good way).

We’re a small team, we bounce ideas around constantly, we get overly excited when something works (“hurrah”), and we’re more than happy to gently mock the bad ideas on the way to the good ones. It’s all part of the process.

The Role

This is a part-time role, ideally 2–3 days per week.

The split is roughly:

75% artwork / 25% creative design

You’ll be working across a variety of projects, including:

– Branding and brand rollouts

– Print artwork and marketing materials

– Social media graphics

– Presentations and decks

– Website updates (WordPress) and internal content

– Ongoing client amends and refinements

There’s also scope to get involved in:

– Light animation or motion work

– Internal promotional content

– Case studies and marketing materials

What We’re Looking For

You’ll likely be at an early stage in your career—whether that’s a recent graduate, college leaver, or someone with some initial experience.

More importantly, you’ll be someone who:

– Is confident using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)

– Can follow a brief properly (this really matters)

– Has a good eye for layout, typography, and detail

– Is organised, reliable, and able to manage their workload

– Shows initiative and common sense in how they approach work

– Is comfortable asking questions when unsure

– Is confident enough to speak up, share ideas, or challenge something if you think it could be improved

Nice To Have (But Not Essential):

– Basic knowledge of WordPress

– Any experience with animation or motion software

– An interest in how design works commercially, not just visually

We’re a very open studio—if you’ve got an idea, a better way of doing something, or even a new tool or process you think could improve things, we genuinely want to hear it.

What you’ll get from this role

– Hands-on experience across real client projects from day one

– A structured handover with an experienced team member

– Ongoing mentorship from our Creative Director

– Exposure to client work, presentations, and occasional networking or content creation

Location & working

Part-time: 2–3 days per week

Primarily studio-based in Lichfield, Staffordshire, with some flexibility for occasional working from home.

Due to our rural location, a driving licence and access to a car is essential.

Salary

£17,000 – £21,000 pro rata (based on 3 days per week)

Depending on experience.

Whichever camp you fall into, this year’s festive creation from PHd is designed to bring a bit of joy, a bit of curiosity… and quite a lot of LEGO®.

Because nothing says “Merry Christmas” quite like a miniature reindeer slowly taking shape on your desk – one brick at a time – while you promise yourself you’re definitely not avoiding emails.

Introducing the PHd LEGO Advent Calendar

This year, we’ve swapped tradition for creativity once again with a 25-piece LEGO build-your-own Rudolph.

Each numbered step is laid out on the advent-style guide included in the pack. Assemble him day by day… or, if patience isn’t your strong suit, all in one festive flurry.

The leaflet shows the full build, parts list, and Rudolph in his finished glory – complete with his shiny PHd nose.We can neither confirm nor deny that our designers spent far too long debating the optimal nose size. (Creativity is a serious business.)

These cards aren’t just for decoration; they’re made to be played with. So, we’ve put together a list of classic card games that you can enjoy with our one-of-a-kind deck. Whether you’re hosting a Christmas party or just enjoying a quiet evening at home, these games will add some extra fun and flair to the festivities.

The Design Behind PHd Design’s Playing Cards

We didn’t want these cards to just look good – we wanted them to tell a story. Each suit has been custom designed with a modern, geometric flair, bringing a fresh perspective to traditional playing card icons. The hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs each feature bold, eye-catching designs that reflect PHd Design’s creative and contemporary approach.

We couldn’t resist adding a personal touch either. The backs of the cards showcase our barn studio – a subtle yet meaningful design element that represents where all the creative magic happens. It’s a little glimpse into the heart of PHd Design, and we think it adds a bit of character to every game you play.

Each card also includes a fun fact about playing cards, ensuring there’s always something interesting to learn as you play. From historical tidbits to quirky trivia, it’s a conversation starter as much as it is a game accessory. These cards are designed to not only look stylish but to spark curiosity and create memories.

In short, our playing cards are crafted with care, character, and a whole lot of personality. Now, let’s take a look at the games you can play with them.

Solitaire (Classic Klondike)

If you’re in the mood for a solo challenge, Solitaire is the perfect way to go. It’s a simple but addictive game where your goal is to build foundation piles in descending order, from Ace to King.

Goal: Arrange the cards into four foundation piles (Ace to King, by suit).
Setup: Lay out 7 columns: the first has 1 card, the second has 2, and so on. Only the top card in each column is face-up. The remaining cards form the draw pile.
Play: Move cards between columns in descending order, alternating colours (for example, a red 5 on a black 6).
Win: Build up each foundation pile, from Ace to King, to win.

It’s a classic, simple game that’s ideal for unwinding.

Rummy

Perfect for a more social game with friends, Rummy is all about forming sets (three or four of the same rank) or runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit).

Goal: Form sets or runs with your cards.
Setup: Deal 7 (or 10) cards to each player. The rest form the draw pile, with one card face-up to start the discard pile.
Play: On your turn, draw a card and discard one from your hand.
Win: The first player to lay down all their cards in sets or runs wins.

It’s easy to learn, but you’ll quickly find that the more you play, the more strategies you’ll discover.

Cheat/Bluff

Ready for a game of deception? Cheat, or Bluff, is all about getting rid of your cards while trying to fool your opponents. Trust us, things can get competitive – and hilarious.

Goal: Be the first to get rid of all your cards.
Setup: Deal all cards evenly to players.
Play: Take turns playing cards face-down, claiming their rank (e.g., “Two 7s”). You can lie, but beware – others can call your bluff.
Calling “Cheat”: If someone doubts your claim, they can call “Cheat.” If your cards match your declaration, the challenger takes the pile. If not, you take it.
Win: The first player to get rid of all their cards wins.

It’s all about reading the room and timing your bluffs just right.

Sh*thead

A popular game in the UK (also known as Palace), Sh*thead is about avoiding being the last player with cards. The twist? You’ll need a bit of luck and strategy to avoid becoming the “Sh*thead.”

Goal: Avoid being the last player with cards.
Setup: Each player gets 3 face-down cards, 3 face-up cards, and a hand of 3 cards.
Play: Players take turns playing cards higher than the previous card. Special cards (like the 2) reset the pile, while the 10 clears it.
Hands: Once you’re out of hand cards, move on to your face-up cards, then your face-down cards (blind!).
Lose: The last person with cards is the “Sh*thead.”

It’s a game of strategy, luck, and sometimes a bit of good old-fashioned bluffing.

Blackjack

If you’re after a game of strategy and chance, Blackjack is a classic. Your goal is to get as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it, all while trying to beat the dealer’s hand.

Goal: Get as close to 21 as possible without going over, and beat the dealer’s hand.
Setup: Players are dealt 2 cards; the dealer gets 1 face-up and 1 face-down.
Play: Players can “Hit” (take a card) or “Stand” (keep their total). Face cards are worth 10, and Aces can be 1 or 11.
Win: Get a total closer to 21 than the dealer, or if the dealer exceeds 21, you win.

It’s a high-stakes game where every decision counts.

Poker (Texas Hold’em)

No list of card games is complete without Poker. Texas Hold’em is the ultimate test of skill, luck, and bluffing. Whether you’re betting big or playing it cool, this is the game where every hand could make or break you.

Goal: Win the pot by having the best hand or by bluffing others into folding.
Setup: Each player gets 2 hole cards, and 5 community cards are dealt over three rounds (Flop, Turn, and River).
Rounds: Players bet after each round of community cards is revealed.
Win: The best 5-card hand (from the hole and community cards) wins the pot.

It’s a game of tactics, strategy, and reading your opponents.

Out of thousands of entries from 27 countries (yes, you read that right—27 countries!), our designs stood out to a panel of industry experts, and we’re over the moon to share the details:

Silver Award for Logo Design – Consumer: Our packaging design for The Sweet Scotch Egg Co impressed the judges with its playful yet refined look.

Silver Award for Complete Rebrand/Redesign: Our rebranding work for Tile Rite earned us top marks in the highly competitive rebrand category.
Side note: PHd was the only UK-based agency to place in this category. Not that we’re bragging… okay, maybe just a little.

For those who aren’t familiar, the Summit Creative Awards is a global competition with a reputation for recognising the best of the best in design and branding. It’s been running for over 30 years, and their rigorous evaluation process ensures only the most creative and innovative projects get recognised. So, it’s safe to say, these shiny silver wins mean a lot to us!

Ready. Set. Doodle! We’re thrilled to announce that PHd Design is once again taking part in ‘National Doodle Day’ this year. That’s right—on Friday, 27th September, the nation’s most creative campaign to support ‘Epilepsy Action’ will commence, and we’re picking up our pens, pencils, and paintbrushes for a cause close to our hearts.

What’s National Doodle Day, You Ask?

‘National Doodle Day’ is the 20th annual fundraiser for ‘Epilepsy Action,’ a charity dedicated to helping those affected by epilepsy. Last year, this event brought together over 600 artists, illustrators, and even a few celebrities to doodle for donations. This year, they’re celebrating in style by extending the auction to a full ten days!

From 20th to 29th September, you’ll have the chance to bid on some incredible (and quirky) artworks on eBay. The funds raised go directly towards supporting the vital work of ‘Epilepsy Action.’

Our Team is All In (Again!)

This marks the second year that PHd Design is joining in on the doodle fun, and we couldn’t be more excited. Every member of our team has picked up their creative tools and submitted a unique doodle, which will be auctioned off as part of the fundraiser. We’ve been working hard behind the scenes, offering sneak peeks of our artwork on social media—because what’s an auction without a little pre-bid excitement?

A Little Incentive for a Big Impact

But we’re not just doodling for fun (although, let’s be honest, it is fun). To make things even more interesting, we’ve got a little challenge brewing within the PHd Design team. Whoever raises the most funds with their doodle will receive a top-secret special prize! No pressure, right? Months ago, our talented team submitted their doodles, and now the event is live! In total there are more than 600 doodles from celebrities, artists, and illustrators are up for auction, with all proceeds going to support Epilepsy Action’s vital work. Our team’s doodles are among the many creative pieces that will be auctioned off to raise funds.
