How We Helped St James’s Place Charitable Foundation Launch the ‘Children of Courage’ Awards

At PHd Design, we’ve always believed in the power of great design to tell important stories. So, when St James’s Place Charitable Foundation approached us to create the brand for their inaugural ‘Children of Courage’ awards, we were thrilled to help bring their vision to life. After all, it’s not every day you get to work on a project that celebrates the bravery and resilience of kids aged 6 to 18 in Birmingham.
The Challenge: Starting from Scratch
The Foundation wanted a brand that encapsulated the spirit of the awards: celebration, inspiration, and above all, heart. They needed everything from a standout logo to event materials and digital assets. The goal? To create a cohesive look and feel that would elevate the event and reflect the incredible stories of the young awardees. Oh, and no pressure—it all had to be ready for the big launch in 2025.
The Solution: A Brand Built with Heart
We kicked off the project with our usual approach: lots of coffee and a good old-fashioned brainstorm. Our aim was to craft a brand that felt dynamic, uplifting, and timeless. The logo became the heart of the brand, quite literally. We designed a visual identity that combined a bold typeface with a vibrant, abstract heart motif. It’s playful yet professional, symbolising the courage and spirit of the children being celebrated.
For the event materials, we ensured every piece was cohesive and visually engaging. The event programme was designed to be as inspiring as the awardees themselves, with clean layouts and a pop of colour to guide the reader. Navigating an event should never be a chore, so our signage and table plans made it easy for guests to find their way while staying immersed in the awards’ vibrant theme.
We also created branded PowerPoint slides for the ceremony, a website to showcase the winners, and social media assets to build excitement in the lead-up to the event. Every element worked together to ensure the event had a professional polish while keeping the stories of the awardees at the forefront.
The Impact: Bringing Courage to the Forefront
The result was a brand that not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations. The cohesive look and feel brought a professional polish to the event while ensuring the stories of the awardees took centre stage. Feedback from the Foundation has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to see the impact the ‘Children of Courage’ awards will have in the years to come.
