A Bright Idea, a Bold Brand and a Network on the Rise

Every great business starts with an idea. Some start with a conversation over coffee. Others with a lightbulb moment. And occasionally, someone decides the business networking scene could do with a bit of a shake-up.

That was the thinking behind Sunrise Networks.

A fresh approach to bringing businesses together, creating genuine connections and opening doors to new opportunities. All it needed was a name, a strong identity and a few people willing to get the ball rolling.

Fortunately, we know a thing or two about branding.

Something New On The Networking Scene

Let’s face it, there’s no shortage of business networking opportunities out there. Breakfast meetings, evening events, business lunches… you could probably fill your entire working week meeting people and still have a few business cards left to hand out.

So, launching another networking organisation meant Sunrise needed to offer something a little different.

Sunrise Networks was established as an independent, not-for-profit networking cooperative, bringing businesses together through a shared approach to building relationships and creating opportunities.

Our Managing Director, Peter Howard, was one of the founding members and personally invested in helping the organisation get off the ground.

And with a brand-new venture comes the need for, well, a brand.

That’s where the rest of the PHd team came in.

A Brand With A Bright Future

Creating a brand from scratch is always an interesting challenge.

There’s no existing identity to work around, no established visual style to preserve and, perhaps most importantly, no recognition to rely on.

You’re starting from zero.

But that also means you’ve got the opportunity to build something that works properly from day one.

For Sunrise, we needed to create an identity that reflected its ambitions and personality, while helping it establish a recognisable presence in a pretty busy networking market.

Professional? Absolutely.

Approachable? Definitely.

Another corporate-looking identity that could belong to any number of organisations? Not if we could help it.

The result was a brand designed to give Sunrise its own personality, providing a consistent visual identity that could be carried across everything from its website and promotional materials to its events.

Because while a logo might be the first thing people notice, it’s everything surrounding it that makes a brand memorable.

Making Sure Everything Looks The Part

A good brand needs to do more than sit nicely at the top of a website.

It needs to work on social media, printed materials, event signage, presentations and whatever else the business might need further down the line.

And ideally, it should still look like the same brand across all of them.

Sounds obvious, doesn’t it?

Yet inconsistent branding is something we see surprisingly often. Different colours, mismatched fonts, graphics that don’t quite belong together… before long, the business starts looking like several different organisations sharing the same name.

For Sunrise, we wanted to make sure that wasn’t going to be an issue.

By developing a consistent visual approach from the outset, we helped give the organisation the foundations to build recognition as its presence grew.

Whether someone encountered Sunrise online, received an invitation to an event or attended in person, the branding needed to feel familiar.

It’s a relatively simple principle, but one that can make a big difference to how a business is perceived.

A Launch With A Little Extra Topping

Of course, creating the brand was only part of the fun.

We also had the opportunity to bring the identity to life for Sunrise’s major launch event, developing event-specific branding and a whole range of supporting materials.

Digital graphics? Check.

Printed collateral? Check.

Branded pizza boxes? Naturally.

Because if you’re going to launch something new, why stop at the obvious?

The pizza boxes might not have been the most conventional branding application we’ve ever worked on, but that’s rather the point.

Every branded touchpoint is an opportunity to reinforce an organisation’s identity, whether it’s a beautifully designed brochure or something that arrives with a side of garlic bread.

It’s those little details that help turn an event into an experience, creating something cohesive, memorable and unmistakably Sunrise.

And for a new organisation looking to make its mark, those first impressions matter.

From Bright Idea To A Growing Network

Fast-forward from those early conversations and Sunrise Networks has continued to develop its presence within the business community.

What began as an idea has grown into an organisation bringing businesses together, hosting events and creating opportunities for its members to connect and collaborate.

And that’s the part we particularly enjoy seeing.

As designers, we spend a lot of time working on what a business could become. We listen to its ambitions, understand its objectives and create an identity designed to support where it wants to go.

But watching that identity out in the real world, being used as the organisation develops, is where things get really interesting.

Now, we’re not about to claim that a good logo is responsible for every new member, business introduction or opportunity Sunrise has created.

That would be a rather impressive logo.

The success of any networking organisation comes down to the people involved, the relationships they build and the value they bring to one another.

But having a clear, consistent and recognisable brand certainly helps.

It gives people something to identify with, helps establish credibility and makes it easier for an organisation to stand out in a crowded market.

Which, when you’re trying to encourage people to join something new, is a pretty useful head start.

Good Branding Isn’t Just For The Grand Opening

One thing we’ve always believed is that branding shouldn’t be treated as a one-off exercise.

A new logo, a shiny website and a launch event might get things started, but a brand needs to keep working long after everyone’s gone home and the leftover pizza has disappeared.

Businesses change. Organisations grow. New opportunities emerge.

And the identity needs to be flexible enough to keep up.

That’s why we put so much thought into creating brands that aren’t just designed for the business as it stands today, but for where it might be heading tomorrow.

With Sunrise Networks, we’ve had the pleasure of being involved from the very beginning, helping turn an idea into something people can see, recognise and become part of.

And with Peter personally involved in the organisation, it’s a project we’ll continue to follow with particular interest.

We’re proud to have played a part in Sunrise’s journey so far, and we’re looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

Because the best branding doesn’t just help a business make a good first impression. It gives it something to build on.
