Rediscover Your SPARK: See Your Business The Way Everyone Else Does

Industry News • 29th September 2026

The five stages of the PHd SPARK process: See, Perceive, Assess, Recommend and Kickstart.

You know your business inside out.

You know what you’re good at. You know why customers come back. You know how much experience sits within your team and all the little things you do differently that make you better at what you do.

The question is…

Does Everybody Else Know That?

Because there can be a surprisingly big gap between how good a business actually is and how good it looks from the outside.

And that gap can cost you.

Customers who don’t quite understand what you do. Prospects who choose a competitor who simply explained themselves better. Opportunities that pass you by because you weren’t remembered. Marketing that keeps going out into the world without really getting anywhere.

That’s why we created PHd SPARK™.

So, What Exactly Is SPARK?

SPARK is our way of taking a proper look at your business from the outside in.

It’s not a rebrand disguised as a strategy session.

And it’s definitely not us arriving with a red pen and telling you everything you’ve been doing wrong for the past ten years.

It’s about understanding where your business is now, how people see it and where there might be opportunities you’re currently missing.

The process has five parts: See, Perceive, Assess, Recommend and Kickstart.

Or, rather conveniently, SPARK.

(We do branding for a living. We couldn’t resist.)

SEE: First, we get to know you

Before we can tell you anything useful, we need to understand what we’re looking at.

So we dig into the business.

What do you do? Who buys from you? Who should be buying from you? Where are you trying to get to? What markets do you operate in? Who are you competing against? What marketing are you already doing?

We look at your customers, demographics, structure, goals, competitors and the bigger commercial picture.

Because there’s very little point recommending a shiny new something until we understand what that something is actually supposed to achieve.

Otherwise, we’re just making things prettier.

And while we’re rather good at that, it’s not really the point.

PERCEIVE: Then we swap sides of the table

This is where we stop looking at the business as you see it and start looking at it as everyone else does.

Customers. Prospects. Employees. Partners. Competitors. Investors.

What do they see?

Do they understand what you do quickly enough?

Do they recognise you?

Do they trust you?

Do they remember you five minutes later?

And when you’re sitting alongside three competitors in someone’s browser tabs, inbox or tender pile, are you giving them a good enough reason to pick you?

This is where being close to your own business can make things difficult.

You know what that service means. You know why that particular feature matters. You know that your team has 60 years of combined experience.

The person encountering you for the first time doesn’t.

They only know what you’ve shown them.

ASSESS: What’s helping – and what’s getting in the way?

Once we understand the business and how it appears from the outside, we start pulling things apart.

Not literally. Your website is safe.

We look at your brand, marketing, visibility, consistency, versatility and overall impact.

What’s working well? What’s being underused? What’s confusing? What’s inconsistent? What no longer represents the business you’ve become?

And, importantly, what doesn’t actually need changing at all?

Because SPARK isn’t about finding as many problems as possible.

If something works, we’ll say so.

We’re far more interested in identifying the areas where a change could make a genuine difference.

You might have a brilliant business with branding that makes you look distinctly average. You might have a strong brand but marketing that doesn’t explain why anyone should choose you. You might be saying all the right things, but saying them differently every time.

Sometimes the problem is big.

Sometimes it’s a collection of little things quietly getting in the way.

RECOMMEND: Right. What do we actually do about it?

Finding opportunities is lovely.

Knowing what to do with them is considerably more useful.

So we turn everything we’ve learned into practical recommendations.

We identify strengths, weaknesses, missed opportunities, areas for growth and places where things could work harder or more efficiently.

Then we prioritise them.

Because nobody needs another enormous report that gets enthusiastically discussed in a meeting, placed carefully in a drawer and rediscovered three years later.

The idea is to give you something you can actually use.

What should you tackle first?

What could have the biggest impact?

What can wait?

What might be a quick win?

And where should you stop spending time, money or energy on things that aren’t really helping?

That last one can be just as valuable as finding something new to do.

KICKSTART: Now we give you a plan

By this point, we’ve done the digging.

Now we turn it into a roadmap.

You’ll know where the opportunities are, what we recommend doing about them and the order we think makes sense.

And then?

That part is up to you.

Some recommendations might be things you can handle internally. Some might be better suited to suppliers you already work with. And some might be areas where you’d like PHd to get involved.

There’s no obligation to hand us a shopping list at the end.

SPARK is there to give you direction.

What you do with that direction is your choice.

Do you need SPARK?

Maybe everything is ticking along nicely, but growth has started to plateau.

Maybe your business has changed considerably over the years, while your brand has… not.

Maybe you’re doing plenty of marketing but can’t quite work out what it’s achieving.

Maybe you’ve got several different ideas about what needs to happen next and need someone from outside the business to look at the whole picture.

Or perhaps you just have that nagging feeling that your business is better than it currently looks.

That’s exactly the sort of thing SPARK is designed to uncover.

Because you don’t necessarily need a problem before you start looking for opportunities.

You Might Not Need To Do More

This is a big one.

When businesses want to grow, the natural reaction is often to add something.

Another campaign.

Another social channel.

Another brochure.

Another advert.

Another meeting about the social channel, brochure and advert.

But many businesses don’t need more activity.

They need better direction.

If people don’t understand why you’re different, shouting louder won’t necessarily help.

If your brand is underselling the quality of your business, sending more people to your website might simply introduce more people to the wrong impression.

If your sales materials aren’t making it easy for someone to choose you, producing twice as many of them probably isn’t the answer.

Sometimes you need to stop looking at individual pieces and look at the whole business instead.

That’s SPARK.

Good Businesses Deserve to be Recognised as Great Businesses

We’ve spent more than three decades helping businesses change how they’re seen.

And one thing we’ve learned is that some of the best businesses are surprisingly bad at showing people just how good they are.

They’ve grown. They’ve improved. They’ve invested in their people. They’ve developed better products and services.

But somewhere along the way, the way they present themselves hasn’t kept up.

SPARK helps us find that disconnect.

To understand what people see now, what you want them to see and what needs to happen in between.

Because ultimately, being good at what you do is only half the battle.

People need to see it.

Understand it.

Remember it.

And choose it.
