Bringing Innovation to Light: The Branding Journey Behind Illuvi

At PHd Design, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of design to create work that not only looks great but solves real-world problems. Our latest project with Mackwell Health, the leaders in intelligent lighting and disinfection solutions, is a shining example of this philosophy in action. Enter Illuvi, a new UV-C Room Disinfection Tower that is set to revolutionise high-level disinfection in healthcare environments. But behind every great product, there’s a brand that brings it to life.

 

The Brief: Clean and Clear

Mackwell Health approached us with a specific challenge: create a strong, clean, and impactful brand for their new UV-C disinfection product. The goal was clear: build a name and logo that communicated precision, safety, and innovation, while resonating with healthcare professionals and facilities focused on cleanliness and sterilisation.

The Name: ‘Illuvi’—A Symbol of Light and Cleanliness

We named the product Illuvi, drawing inspiration from the words “illuminate” and “UV” (ultraviolet), both of which are core to the disinfection process. The name carries the promise of light, safety, and clarity, all essential in healthcare settings where hygiene is paramount. But creating a name is only part of the process; the next step was translating that concept into a visual identity.

 

The Logo: Iconography and Elegance

The Illuvi logo had to convey a sense of precision and modernity, with elements that symbolised the UV-C disinfection process. We used a subtle top-view icon of a light device, which visually represents the device positioned at the centre of a room, shining outwards to every corner. This idea is reflected in the carefully crafted icon within the logo, representing the reach and effectiveness of the Illuvi disinfection system.

The ‘I’ in Illuvi is a key focal point, with a set of dots placed on the ‘I’s, referencing the dots used in the product’s UV-C technology—an elegant, yet clear visual reminder of the power behind the system. To add further distinction, we made the ‘UV’ part of the logo bold and in uppercase, highlighting its importance in the product’s function and reinforcing its role in the disinfection process.

The typography was designed to be clean and contemporary, in line with the Mackwell brand identity, ensuring that Illuvi would sit seamlessly alongside Mackwell’s other products, while standing out on its own in the market.

The Result: A Fresh Identity for a Groundbreaking Product

The final result is a simple, strong, and memorable logo that perfectly captures the essence of Illuvi. It’s not just a logo; it’s a mark of innovation, cleanliness, and reliability—everything you want in a product designed to disinfect the environments that matter most.

By closely aligning the brand with its purpose—disinfecting spaces with UV-C light—we ensured that the design communicated exactly what it needed to: effectiveness, safety, and cutting-edge technology.

Fire Scene Investigation: A New Brand for a New Division

Creating logos is more than just designing something that looks good; it’s about crafting a visual identity that tells a compelling story, inspires trust, and stands the test of time. We recently had the pleasure of working with Fire Scene Group to launch their latest division: Fire Scene Investigation. The challenge? To design a brand that reflected both their professional expertise in fire investigation and the serious, legally binding nature of their work.

 

The Brief: Professional Meets Practical

Fire Scene Investigation isn’t just another branch of a company; it’s a crucial service for homeowners, businesses, and insurers. The division provides expert, unbiased assessments to help determine fire origins, identify future prevention methods, and produce legally binding reports. That’s no small task, so the brand needed to convey authority, expertise, and trustworthiness, all while remaining approachable.
The logo design needed to serve as a visual anchor for the division and work cohesively with Fire Scene Group’s other three branches. The client requested that the logo not only represent the division’s function but also integrate subtle nods to fire scene investigation, using elements like ladders. The result? A design that’s not only visually strong but tells a story about the investigative nature of the work.

How We Did It

Our approach was to break down the essence of Fire Scene Investigation into four distinct pillars, each representing one of the brand’s divisions. These pillars are visually captured through the four colours present in the logo. Each colour is not only an aesthetic choice but a symbol of the different facets of the service provided by Fire Scene Investigation.
The logo itself is a fusion of modern typography and subtle graphic elements. The ‘ladder’ motif is embedded within the design, cleverly reinforcing the investigative aspect of the service. After all, fire investigations often require a ‘step-by-step’ process of uncovering the truth, and ladders are tools of access and discovery. We wanted the logo to speak to this process in a way that felt natural and intuitive, rather than forced.
Building a New Digital Home

 

The Colour Palette: A Thoughtful Approach

Each of the four colours in the logo represents a different division within Fire Scene Group. The colour choices were made not only for their aesthetic appeal but for their ability to stand out in a professional, yet approachable manner. The palette is bold, balanced, and grounded in a sense of reliability—critical qualities when it comes to the serious nature of fire investigation work.

The Outcome

The final design is one that speaks to both the precision and importance of fire investigation while remaining approachable and trustworthy. It’s a brand that reflects the professional, expert nature of Fire Scene Investigation, yet is also versatile enough to be used across various platforms and mediums. From legal reports to insurance documentation, this logo will confidently represent Fire Scene Group as they continue their work in fire origin analysis and prevention.

Rebranding Zest Life: Creating a Brand That Energises

The new Zest Life logo, designed to represent balance, wellness, and nature.

Our team have long believed in the power of rejuvenation – not just in the form of good design but also in the way a brand can re-energise a business. This was certainly the case with our latest project for Zest Life.

Zest Life, a wellness company offering bespoke seasonal yoga retreats, came to us in need of a brand overhaul that better aligned with their philosophy, values, and target audience. Let’s face it, they’re not just offering yoga retreats, they’re offering transformative experiences – and their old branding just wasn’t cutting it.

 

A Brand With a Purpose

The Zest Life story is nothing short of inspiring. Founded by Laura Bell after a life-changing boating accident left her with a broken back at just 18 years old, Zest Life grew out of a personal recovery journey. Through yoga, nature, and wholesome living, Laura turned her pain into purpose, creating retreats that help others find healing, peace, and energy – the same way she did.

Zest Life isn’t just a wellness company; it’s a movement. Their retreats focus on revitalising the body, nourishing with wholesome food, and reconnecting with nature. It’s about achieving balance, reclaiming vitality, and finding mental clarity in today’s busy world.

So, how did we take this powerful narrative and translate it into a fresh, visually compelling brand that mirrors Zest Life’s essence?

The Rebranding Process: From Vision to Logo

Our approach was clear: we needed to create a visual identity that represented Zest Life’s core philosophy while appealing to their audience – individuals looking for healing, calm, and inspiration.

The result? A logo that captures the harmony between yoga, nature, and the holistic lifestyle Zest Life embodies.

The logo features elements that reflect the core values of Zest Life:
– Nature: A leaf and mountains, signifying the importance of the great outdoors and reconnecting with nature.
– Elements: The sun, water, wind, and mountains – a nod to the four elements that shape Zest Life’s seasonal retreats.
– Yoga: A subtle balance of shapes, representing movement, flow, and inner peace.

We chose a clean, contemporary design that is easy to recognise and scalable across various platforms. It feels modern but with a grounded, earthy vibe – exactly what the retreats represent.

Building a New Digital Home

Once the logo was finalised, we turned our attention to Zest Life’s website. We wanted a user experience that was as calming as one of their retreats. With that in mind, we designed a website that is clean, easy to navigate, and visually soothing.

The site is designed with purpose – it’s not just about looking good, it’s about delivering an experience that mirrors the Zest Life ethos. The content flows naturally, guiding visitors through everything from the company’s story to the retreat offerings, all while ensuring they feel connected to the heart of the brand.

A Fresh, Clean Start for Mid-Warwickshire Cleaning Supplies

When Mid-Warwickshire Cleaning Supplies came to us, they wanted more than just a fresh coat of paint – they needed a total brand overhaul. From a revamped logo to sleek new packaging, a fully reimagined website, and eye-catching van fleet livery, they were after a design that matched their business ambition.

The challenge? Making cleaning supplies look as clean and professional as the services they offer, while ensuring the brand stood out in a competitive market. Here’s how we rolled up our sleeves and created a design identity that shines.

 

Branding with Purpose: The M and W Logo

Let’s talk logos. The logo is often the first touchpoint of a brand, and it needed to be bold yet functional. Our starting point was a clean and simple design that represented both the “M” and “W” in Mid-Warwickshire Cleaning Supplies. We wanted it to be instantly recognisable, and we achieved this by cleverly weaving the two letters together into one dynamic shape – it’s both a mark of distinction and a clever visual cue that ties back to the company’s name.

We didn’t just stop there. The logo’s design needed to be versatile, looking sharp on everything from a business card to a fleet of vans, packaging, and digital platforms. Mission accomplished.

Packaging Design that Pops (and Gets Noticed)

Let’s face it – the cleaning supply market can be a bit, well, uninspiring. So, we took this opportunity to break away from the norm and introduce a packaging design that’s not only functional but also stylish and engaging. The goal was to make each product as appealing as it is practical, ensuring that customers could identify the products quickly, even from a distance. We used bold typography, sharp graphics, and a consistent colour palette that ties back to the brand’s new identity.

But there’s more to packaging than just looking good. It’s about telling a story – and with each box, bottle, or label, we made sure the brand’s reliability and professionalism were at the forefront. Clean, clear, and simple. Just like the products themselves.

A Website that Works as Hard as They Do

Next, we tackled the Mid-Warwickshire Cleaning Supplies website. The company needed an online presence that reflected the quality of service they provide while offering users a seamless experience. We designed a website that’s as easy to navigate as it is visually appealing, using the newly revamped branding elements throughout.

We incorporated intuitive features such as easy-to-find product categories, clear calls-to-action, and a responsive design that works smoothly on mobile and desktop. How We Helped Russou To Stand Out From The Crowd

When Russou, a property services consultancy specialising in tech solutions, sought to relaunch their brand ahead of a key industry event, they knew a fresh, standout identity was essential. With their competitors also vying for attention, they needed a bold rebrand to ensure they made an impact. That’s where we came in—tasked with creating a design that would help them not only compete but stand out with confidence.

 

Understanding the Brief

Russou’s goal was clear: they wanted to relaunch their brand in a way that would not only resonate with their target audience but also reflect the cutting-edge services they provide. With a major industry event on the horizon, they knew they had to get their branding just right—no second chances for first impressions!

We were tasked with creating a logo that would immediately convey professionalism, innovation, and approachability, while helping them compete in a crowded field. Along with the logo, Russou needed a temporary holding page for their website, printed materials, business cards, exhibition stands, and pull-up banners—all of which would make a big impact at the event.

The Design Process: From Ideas to Impact

To start, we got to know Russou’s core values and vision. We understood that this rebrand wasn’t just about creating something that looked good; it was about positioning them as a forward-thinking, professional business in an ever-evolving industry.

With the client’s brief in mind, we crafted a sleek and modern logo that paired a bold, distinctive ‘R’ with the company name and descriptor, Russou Services Group. The choice of colours—dark blue and an inviting teal—helped to convey trustworthiness, professionalism, and innovation. This wasn’t just a logo; it was the face of a new era for Russou, one that they could proudly showcase at the event.

From there, we designed a range of supporting materials. The temporary holding page provided visitors with a polished first glance at Russou’s new look, while the printed materials—business cards, brochures, and exhibition stands—ensured their brand would have maximum visibility at the event. Those pull-up banners? They were designed to be unmissable, providing impactful, clear messaging that highlighted Russou’s tech-savvy approach to property services.

How We Helped St James’s Place Charitable Foundation Launch the ‘Children of Courage’ Awards

At PHd Design, we’ve always believed in the power of great design to tell important stories. So, when St James’s Place Charitable Foundation approached us to create the brand for their inaugural ‘Children of Courage’ awards, we were thrilled to help bring their vision to life. After all, it’s not every day you get to work on a project that celebrates the bravery and resilience of kids aged 6 to 18 in Birmingham.

 

The Challenge: Starting from Scratch

The Foundation wanted a brand that encapsulated the spirit of the awards: celebration, inspiration, and above all, heart. They needed everything from a standout logo to event materials and digital assets. The goal? To create a cohesive look and feel that would elevate the event and reflect the incredible stories of the young awardees. Oh, and no pressure—it all had to be ready for the big launch in 2025.

The Solution: A Brand Built with Heart

We kicked off the project with our usual approach: lots of coffee and a good old-fashioned brainstorm. Our aim was to craft a brand that felt dynamic, uplifting, and timeless. The logo became the heart of the brand, quite literally. We designed a visual identity that combined a bold typeface with a vibrant, abstract heart motif. It’s playful yet professional, symbolising the courage and spirit of the children being celebrated.

For the event materials, we ensured every piece was cohesive and visually engaging. The event programme was designed to be as inspiring as the awardees themselves, with clean layouts and a pop of colour to guide the reader. Navigating an event should never be a chore, so our signage and table plans made it easy for guests to find their way while staying immersed in the awards’ vibrant theme.

We also created branded PowerPoint slides for the ceremony, a website to showcase the winners, and social media assets to build excitement in the lead-up to the event. Every element worked together to ensure the event had a professional polish while keeping the stories of the awardees at the forefront.

The Impact: Bringing Courage to the Forefront

The result was a brand that not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations. The cohesive look and feel brought a professional polish to the event while ensuring the stories of the awardees took centre stage. Feedback from the Foundation has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to see the impact the ‘Children of Courage’ awards will have in the years to come.

Tile Rite’s Outdoor Range Gets a Fresh Green Glow

Our team love nothing more than rolling up our sleeves, digging into a creative challenge, and unearthing solutions that help our clients shine. When Tile Rite, a longstanding client and one of our most vocal cheerleaders, approached us to craft a new sub-brand for their upcoming outdoor range, we jumped at the opportunity.

 

The Brief: Standing Out While Staying On-Brand

Tile Rite’s request was clear: their new range, featuring products like patio sealers and rust-off spray cleaners, needed to step boldly into the great outdoors. To achieve this, they sought packaging and branding that would not only highlight the rugged, nature-focused qualities of the range but also distinguish it from their existing product lines.

Our starting point? A colour refresh. Tile Rite’s signature blue branding has been a trusty companion for years, but this new venture required a palette that whispered “nature” while still screaming “Tile Rite.” The solution? A vibrant green, symbolising growth, vitality, and outdoor living.

The Solution: Packaging That Pops

We didn’t just add a dash of green and call it a day. Our design process involved:

 1.Strategic Colour Selection: Green became the hero colour, representing the outdoor range. It stands apart from Tile Rite’s other products on the shelf without losing the cohesive visual identity.

2. Iconic Branding Elements: The Tile Rite logo remains front and centre, but we paired it with bold, modern typography and an earthy aesthetic to reinforce the range’s outdoor focus.

3.User-Friendly Design: Each product label features clear, easy-to-read instructions, ensuring both DIY enthusiasts and professional users get the most out of the products.

This isn’t just a new sub-brand; it’s a statement. Tile Rite’s outdoor range appeals to customers in a saturated market by balancing trustworthiness with a fresh, innovative edge. When Concentrates Direct came to us with an exciting brief for their latest venture, we knew it was an opportunity to create something unapologetically bold. They wanted a sub-brand for their new range of industrial-grade cleaning solutions—products tough enough to tackle the grime that others can’t. The challenge? Craft a brand that stands out in a crowded market while showcasing the product’s powerful performance. The result? MAKES*IT Shine.

 

A Name with a Wink and a Nod

Let’s address the elephant in the room—or rather, the subtle, cheeky one-liner in the name. MAKES*IT Shine is a clever play on words that delivers just enough edge to get noticed. Pronounced as “Makes it shine,” it nods to the product’s incredible cleaning power. But the playful typography nearly spells out something more risqué—perfectly balancing professionalism with a bit of personality. This isn’t your typical industrial cleaner; it’s a brand with attitude.

Packaging that Packs a Punch

To match the audacious name, we designed packaging that demands attention. Each label is bold and clean (pun intended), with a high-contrast colour palette that ensures visibility on shelves and in industrial environments. The design communicates durability and quality without clutter, ensuring customers know they’re investing in products that deliver results.
From the typography to the materials used, we considered every detail. The design needed to reflect both the strength of the solution and the wit of the brand. Think practical functionality meets visual appeal, because even industrial cleaning products deserve a bit of style.

Rebranding Tactile Technology: Crafting a Future-Focused Identity for IT Excellence

When Tactile Technology, a Birmingham-based IT solutions provider, approached PHd Design, they had a vision: a fresh, cohesive brand identity that spoke directly to their core mission and values. With over 55 years of combined experience in IT, Tactile Technology supports businesses with cutting-edge services like hosted telephony, data centre security, and comprehensive IT support. The challenge was to capture that expertise and make their identity as sleek, intuitive, and powerful as the solutions they provide. Challenge accepted!

 

The Brief: Strengthening a Trusted Brand

Tactile Technology sought a visual identity that would reflect their reliability, technological sophistication, and dedication to innovation. Their existing brand had served them well, but as they continued to grow and adapt to the demands of the IT landscape, they needed a look and feel that was as dynamic as their service offerings. Our mission was clear: reimagine their brand to align seamlessly with their forward-thinking ethos.

The Solution: Bold, Three-Dimensional, and Tech-Infused

Our team began by diving deep into Tactile Technology’s values, strengths, and vision for the future. We translated these qualities into a visual language that would serve as the foundation for their rebrand, from their logo to their new website.

Logo Redesign

At the heart of Tactile Technology’s new identity is a striking, interlocked 3D ‘T’ logo. This symbol is more than just a design; it’s a nod to the layers of expertise and support they bring to every client. The two ‘T’s, connected and visually interwoven, represent partnership and integration—a perfect metaphor for how Tactile Technology works seamlessly with their clients to provide tailored IT solutions.

A Website That Works as Hard as Their Team

The rebranding included an overhaul of their website. We focused on clean design, intuitive navigation, and a structure that highlights their key services: hosted telephony, data centre security, IT support, and hardware/software solutions. Each service section offers an interactive and engaging way for potential clients to explore Tactile’s offerings, with visual cues that reflect the new brand’s modern and accessible feel.
