Radmoor Training, a beacon of expertise in First Aid, Manual Handling, and Health & Safety, found themselves facing stiffer competition after a local rival was gobbled up by a corporate giant. Determined to stay ahead of the game, they joined forces with PHd Design through our ‘free design giveaway,’ a humble initiative to support businesses navigating the post-COVID landscape.

The Creative Odyssey

Our mission was crystal clear: rebrand Radmoor Training and craft marketing materials that not only reflected their professionalism but also resonated with the local community. Inspired by the deer-dotted landscape of Radmoor, our design magicians worked their magic to conjure a logo and branding that would make heads turn faster than a deer spotting a headline-grabbing acorn.

Today, we’re thrilled to unveil our latest triumph at PHd Design – the transformation of Ministry of Doughnuts into a delectable haven of artisan delights with a touch of military precision. Buckle up for a delightful journey through doughnut diplomacy!

 

The Sweet Conquest Begins

Ministry of Doughnuts, one of the lucky winner’s of our most recent ‘free design giveaway,’ captured our hearts with their dedication to crafting hand-made, artisanal doughnuts. Armed with our creativity and a sprinkle of humour, we embarked on a mission to give them a brand makeover that would stand out in the competitive world of sweet treats.

The Strategic Inspiration

Inspiration struck like a sugar rush when we delved into the concept of the Ministry of Defence. After all, aren’t doughnuts a universal symbol of peace and joy? We envisioned a brand that would not only tantalise taste buds but also create a sense of order and delight akin to a well-executed military operation.

Reimagining a Logo

The heart of any rebranding venture lies in the logo, and ours was no exception. Presenting the Ministry of Doughnuts’ emblem – a regal crown adorned with three different types of sumptuous doughnuts. This playful twist on the Ministry of Defence logo symbolises the sweet reign and authority of our client’s handcrafted delights. It’s not just a logo; it’s a proclamation – doughnuts, the crowned champions of happiness!

PHd Design, the maestros of visual storytelling, teamed up with the illustrious Bateman’s Brewery to concoct a brand update that’s as timeless as the brewery’s 150-year-old legacy.

 

A Sip of History

Bateman’s Brewery, with roots stretching back to 1874, has weathered the storms of two world wars and witnessed five generations of the Bateman family. As the proud custodians of a brewing tradition that spans 150 years, Bateman’s embarked on a journey to refresh its visual identity, ensuring it resonated with the past while boldly embracing the future.

PHd Design: Crafting Visual Alchemy

Enter PHd Design, the artistic wizards from Staffordshire, handpicked by Bateman’s to breathe new life into their iconic brand. Imagine a meeting of minds, where tradition dances with innovation, and craftsmanship meets creativity. Stuart and Jaclyn Bateman, the curators of Bateman’s Brewery, joined forces with PHd to create a brand scheme that not only pays homage to the craft brewing traditions but also positions the brewery for the next hop-forward phase.

Unveiling the Artistry

The heart of this collaboration lies in the unveiling of Bateman’s new branding scheme, set to grace the pubs and glasses of beer enthusiasts nationwide. Roll up, roll up for the star of the show – the revamped pump clips! These miniature works of art, the face of Bateman’s products, will soon adorn pubs, signalling the perfect blend of heritage and modernity.

Meet the Heroes: XB, XXXB, Yella Belly Gold, and 5G

The brewery’s key players, XB, XXXB, Yella Belly Gold, and the all-new 5G, each donned a fresh coat of identity. The Bateman family’s 5th generation is celebrated with ‘5G,’ a beer born of tradition and innovation, just like the family behind it. With two versions for guest appearances and permanent stocking, these clips aren’t just labels; they’re stories waiting to be unfolded.

Stuart Bateman, the maestro behind the brewing magic, emphasises the importance of working with the right designers. Revamping an Artisan Camper

Our team is thrilled to share another delicious journey of transformation, but this time we’re hitting the road with out friends at Artisian Camper!

 

 

 

Unlocking Artisan Camper’s Branding Potential

Artisan Camper, a local artisan food producer renowned for crafting unique pork crackling from the back of a vintage VW camper van, approached us with an exciting challenge. They needed a branding and packaging solution that would capture the hearts of their customers while keeping costs low.

 

The Unique Journey of Artisan Camper

Artisan Camper’s story is not just about their delectable pork crackling but also about their humble beginnings. Huddled in the cozy confines of a VW camper, they embarked on a mission to create flavours that stood out. These delicious, small batch-snacks were a hit at popular events and markets, but their branding and packaging required an upgrade to match their growing reputation.

 

Our Creative Approach

Our aim was to provide Artisan Camper with a solution that would keep costs low while allowing for future expansion of flavours. To achieve this, we designed a single packaging tube that could be customised with stickers to indicate the flavour within. This ingenious design not only streamlined production costs but also granted Artisan Camper the flexibility to introduce new flavours without diluting their brand recognition.

The Visual Transformation

We kicked off this exciting transformation with a brand new logo. This logo, with it’s professional and appealing look, was the first step in elevating Artisan Camper’s brand identity. We then extended this fresh new appearance to their packaging and point-of-sale banners, ensuring a cohesive, eye catching brand image.

The result was a brand that not only caught the eye but also resonated with Artisan Camper’s loyal customers and newcomers alike. It began with the strategic buyback of the family business by Dr. Jason Wouhra and his family, followed by the acquisition of the Aston and Smethwick depots in 2020. These pivotal moves marked the first steps in their quest to build a stronger and more successful enterprise.

They made the strategic decision to delay the rebranding process. Recognising the importance of customer recognition and familiarity, they chose to wait until their valued customers were well-acquainted with the new name. This patient approach ensured a seamless transition, enabling Lioncroft to retain and strengthen the trust of their loyal customer base.

Rebranding with PHd Design

Our branding experts here at PHd Design worked tirelessly to deliver outstanding results, breathing new life into the brand and positioning Lioncroft Wholesale for success.

We’re celebrating the return of our ever-popular ‘Free Design Giveaway’, by looking back at previous winners, and how their chosen project impacted their businesses…

The giveaway was first launched back in 2020, as a way for PHd Design to help support those businesses who were struggling under the weight of the global pandemic. Out of the entries received, one stood out having been hit hard by lockdowns – ‘The Olde Peculiar’. This pub based in Handsacre, had a tremendous history and real ambition. And following a long period without investment, the owners wanted to give the pub branding and signage a makeover – ready for when lockdown ended, and they were able to welcome back customers. However, in close second place was ‘Gina’, a charity providing support to victims of rape and sexual abuse. When we discussed with them the work that they do and the impact it has – we knew we had to help them, so we extended our offer of a free design project – which they gladly accepted.

Both rebrands were fantastic projects for our team, giving them a chance to really flex their creative muscles.

The Olde Peculiar

The Olde Peculiar opted to receive a full rebrand, which included a new logo, signage design and menu design. We think you’ll agree that the results look fantastic!

GINA

The team at GINA, opted for a full rebrand, hoping that a vibrant new brand would help to build awareness of the charity and their work. The rebrand was certainly a success, and awareness of the charity has greatly increased since 2020. Most recently they have collaborated with actress Emily Atack as part of a BBC documentary exploring sexual harassment.

“We wanted to bring a totally different spin to our sector through our brand; we want to bring colour, eccentricity, intrigue, and just a tiny sprinkling of the good kind of ‘crazy.’ This might sound weird (to have ‘fun’, ‘colourful’ quirky branding for an organisation in our sector); however, we believe that our sector needs this element of vibrancy and something unique (it needs the colour, brightness, joy and hope). Not much to say PHd other than, we LOVE THESE!”

2021

Our team agreed that for the 2021 giveaway, we wanted to do things a little differently. This time the competition would be open only to those businesses within the food and drink industry. One entrant in particular caught our attention, with their application requesting a fresh new look. They explained that their products had been rejected by stores, potential customers and the wider target audience. The feedback she had received confirmed that the existing branding and packaging were to blame.

Naturally Heavenly Chocolates

Like many startup’s their initial branding and packaging choices were ‘bootstrap’ selections. With a friend designing the original logo and the packaging being the cheapest available. After having taken the time to understand the businesses ethos, the importance of sustainability and budget restrictions – PHd put together a low cost, multi-functional packaging solution. And using our contacts we were able to source an eco-friendly packaging for the same price per unit as the previous packaging.

“Within a few weeks I was receiving invites from vegan events and companies who had rejected me previously. I’ve been invited to an ’emerging food business’ stand at the BBC Good Food Show, and I’m in discussions with numerous retail units and farm shops who are asking to stock my products.”
“There has been an 80% increase in sales in the 4 months following the rebrand. Social media followers increased by 144% in the first 3 weeks alone, and many people visiting me at markets said that they had seen the brand on social media and wanted to come and say hello and make a purchase.”

2022

2022 was a landmark year for PHd Design, in which we not only celebrated 30 years of design excellence – but also taking home an international design award for our rebrand of Titanic Brewery. To celebrate, it seemed only fitting to run the giveaway not once, but twice this year…

Staffordshire Gin

Staffordshire Gin caught our attention with their unusual request, they were looking for a unique packaging design to house their upcoming limited edition gin. Our team put pencil to paper and began fleshing out initial designs that would compliment their existing branding, whilst highlighting the uniqueness of their new gin. We were also able to source an affordable print company that could accurately print highly detailed designs onto textured paper.

We’ve had to keep this fantastic design under our hats for some time, but now that the ‘Hertiage Edition’ gin has been officially launched, we’re pleased to share the end result.

Military Chef

Our second giveaway of the year received some great applications, but our team were blown away by the enthusiasm of ‘Military Chef’. A former armed forces chef had set up shop selling chocolate and other sweet treats, and was now looking for a full rebrand to help make his business stand out from the competition.

Our team gave their existing logo a full redesign, making it more professional, whilst still embodying the military essence. We then redesigned their packaging to fit the new branding. The new designs proved to be very popular with customers.

To celebrate World Chocolate Day, we are shining the spotlight on Naturally Heavenly Chocolates.
They specialise in selling vegan, natural, environmentally conscious and freshly made chocolate.
